Nitrogen on the Table

Recently a Special Report on Nitrogen and Food was published:  “Nitrogen on the Table”.  It addresses the effects of food choice on European nitrogen pollution, GHG emissions and land-use.  In essence, 50% reduction in meat and dairy consumption by Europeans would reduce pollution by 40%, while bringing us closer into line with dietary recommendations for healthy eating. At the same time it would free up large areas of agricultural land for other opportunities.
The report has been led by Henk Westhoek (PBL) as part of the work of the Task Force on Reactive Nitrogen (TFRN), which hosts the European Nitrogen Assessment (ENA) process under the UNECE LRTAP Convention.   The report was launched at the European Parliament on 12 January 2016, chaired by Sirpa Pietikainen MEP with a forceful reflection on the report from Janez Potocnik.
